Day at the Beach

The reason I decided to stay in San Juan Del Sur was to see if I could improve my surfing skills (lets just say that I am glad there are hundreds of miles of surfing coast, because I am going to need it all to learn this sport). The sport beats the crap out of you when you are learning as you get tossed around and slammed by the waves like a little rag doll.

So I decided I needed to rest my battered body and have a beach day. So out came Fred after resting in the hotel lobby for four days. Fred seems to live the highlife as I pay all the bills and he just chills out in luxury. But that did not last long since in order to get to some of Nicaragua's beautiful beaches you need to take some of the nastiest roads.

But if you are willing to drive these less than desirable roads you come upon amazing beaches like the ones bellow. I visited no less than three separate beaches that day and maybe saw a total of 40 people in all!

Hookers on wheels

Now there is no such thing as the celebration of Thanksgiving in Nicaragua, but it seems that on the same date as our Canadian Thanksgiving there was a festival going on in the public square for the locals of San Juan del Sur. So after Skyping with my family back home just before their big turkey dinner.  I realized I needed to go out and see if I could at least find myself a turkey burger to celebrate (I ended up having a burrito which I just imagined was a succulent juicy turkey drum stick).

So off I go to walk through the town in search of the ever elusive turkey burger. And as I am walking I here a female voice from behind me saying "hello hello". So I turn around and there on a bicycle is this attractive girl.

Now you have to understand that I have never been the object of attention for females, so you can imagine my surprise when I was actually getting attention from a female. Actually my love life has always reminded me of playing the game dodge ball as a kid. But this time only with women and I am the sole guy standing in the middle waiting to be annihilated.

So of course I am a little weary and as it turned out rightly so! After a brief polite conversation the topic went from "hello whats your name where you from etc..... to do you want sex".

Now I would not blog about this but for the unique reason that it happened to me again while walking home but from a different lady on a bike. But this one had it figured out as she had a little bell on her bike that she rang when behind you so you instinctively turn around to look.

It seems that the hookers down here have it figured out. Why stand on a corner and wait for the customers to find you when you can go out and find the customer.

You have to love the entrepreneurial spirit!

Isle de Ometepe, Nicaragua

Welcome to the island of Ometepe situated on Lago Nicaragua, which is the largest fresh water lake in Central America. The island is made up of two beautiful volcanos that can be ascended if you are a serious hiker

The only way to the island is via ferries either from Granada or San Jorge. My recommendation is San Jorge since it takes only an hour. This is where I ran into Aron and Sarafina from California who are riding two KLR 650's. I met them in Antigua and again waiting for the ferry to the island.

The island is very tranquil so if you want a place to chill for a week this would be it.  It consists of swimming holes and waterfalls with some crazy rough back-roads to get around the island.

Now I know why they call it the rainy season

A view of the Isle de Ometepe in the rain

It seems the rainy season has caught up to me after 4 months of fairly good weather. There are a few things different about the rain here compared to back home.

My rain gear is just not suited for this
First you can almost set your clock by it for the most part. Meaning if it is going to rain it usually starts somewhere in the late afternoon. And second there is only one type of rain here and that is torrential with high winds. None of that light misty stuff, only street flooding soaks you to the bone rain.

A good beach day gone bad
And so far I have not found adequate rain gear to keep me dry.  But since the season is almost over no point in looking for new gear now.
