The Stupas of Bagan

After another 8 hour drive over horrible roads consisting mainly of off road we arrived in the temple town of Bagan.

One of four golden Buddha's found in the centre temple. These statues confused me though as I thought Buddha was a man? Yet these Buddhas clearly have feminine features with hips and breasts.

Bagan is home to the largest concentration of Buddhist temples, pagodas, stupas and ruins in the world.

Many of the Stupas date as far back as the 11th and 12th century

Prior to sunset everyone climbs one of the larger temples and awaits the sunset. As the sun goes down it highlights the temples spread throughout the region with a warm orange glow.

Bagan really doesn't get a rainy season so the earth is very dry. The area with its red sand and trees gave me a feeling of being in Africa.
